Courses: PBL (Problem Based Learning), English Writing Profile: Wang Yiqing is a 2013 Nanjing Special-Term Professor, a board member of Jiangsu New Drug Development and Research Association, and an executive board member of Nanjing Medical Device Association. Since he started to work with Nanjing University’s Department of Biomedical Engineering in 2013, Wang and his research group have conducted research on precise navigation technology in tumor surgery with the strong support by Nie Shuming, dean of the college to which the faculty belongs. The research group has developed digital, intelligent and highly sensitive navigation devices with which development has been achieved in real time during the surgery as well as related tumor developer. It has been demonstrated by clinical results in many of Nanjing’s Grade-3 hospitals that devices of this kind can greatly help doctors completely remove malignant tumors in a surgery under the condition in which normal organ functions can be maximally maintained and patients’ after-surgery living quality can be guaranteed while the rate of survival in the first five years after tumor surgery can be increased. This technology has gained the recognition of Professor Sunil Singhal, an international authority in image navigation surgery and surgery expert in the Department of Thoracic Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of University of Pennsylvania. He even proposed to take part in the clinical experiment of this device in America, and Ni Kena, a graduate student in this research group has gone to the University of Pennsylvania to cooperate with Professor Singhal. The research group will send more students to America and strengthen this cooperation. Stanford University Professor William Moernar, a winner of 2014 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and an authority in molecular imaging, spoke highly of this technology when he came to Nanjing for an exchange. Currently, the research group is undertaking 1 key research project of the Ministry of Science and Technology and 3 Jiangsu Key Research and Development Projects (on cutting-edge clinical technology). Besides, the research group has made a great breakthrough in the development of new-type anti-cancer medicines and magnetic medical imaging nanomaterials. Professor Wang Yiqing was once a research assistant professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering of Georgia Institute of Technology, Emory University, USA, and researched on nanotechnology in cancer chemotherapy and diagnosis under the supervision of Professor Nie Shuming. As a technical leader in the field of chemical and nanocarriers, he took part in several key scientific research projects supported by American National Cancer Institute such as Center of Nanotechnology Personalization and Predictable Tumor and Special Study on Head and Neck Cancer and developed a series of nano anti-cancer drugs with high scientific research value and great clinical application prospects. The research projects of this research group have reflected the engineering features of the Department of Modern Engineering and Applied Sciences by efficiently converting research outcomes into practical use and emphasizing fundamental research during scientific research conversion. Besides, this research group has published papers in first-class journals such as Analytical Chemistry and has applied for over 10 patents. Moreover, the research group has closely cooperated with several American research groups and therefore, there have been annual mutual visits and student exchange. Currently, the group consists of 2 full-time researchers and over 10 students and their research focuses include surgery navigation technologies, high-polymer chemistry, preparation of nano materials and their application in such areas as biology and medical science.
